We revisit verified guides as places open, close, or materially change. The world guide highlights city leaders without pretending that locally calibrated scores form a global league table.

What makes a great matcha place?

The best matcha cafes share a few things: they use ceremonial-grade matcha from reputable Japanese producers (Uji, Nishio, Kagoshima are the big three regions). The preparation is done with care - proper water temperature (70–80°C), whisked to a smooth froth, no clumps. Beyond the drink, the best places have a clear identity: a minimalist tea room in Kyoto, a third-wave matcha bar in Brooklyn, a traditional kissaten that's been open for a century.

Our scoring captures all of this. Essential places (70+) are must-visits. Recommended places (50–69) are solid choices. Everything below is Listed - on our radar but not yet proven.
